Best Transgender Bars and Clubs in Sheffield

Sheffield's trans-friendly nightlife is a small but real scene, anchored in the city's own Gay Quarter and supplemented by a handful of community-run queer spaces a short distance away. In recent years a number of LGBTQ+ bars and clubs in Sheffield have closed down, meaning the scene is compact โ€” but what remains is deliberately welcoming, and a number of newly-founded organisations are bringing a more radical and community-focused ethos to Sheffield's nascent LGBTQ+ scene. For trans people living in or visiting South Yorkshire, this guide covers where to actually go.

The Sheffield Trans Scene

There is an entire district called the Gay Quarter in Sheffield where most of the LGBT clubs are located. It sits at the foot of the Moor, within easy reach of the city centre. The new Gay Quarter is centred around Dempseys, Sheffield's legacy gay bar, and it features three new gay venues with more to follow. Beyond the Gay Quarter, the real trans-welcoming energy in Sheffield right now comes from the DIY end: Gut Level, a queer arts collective, has hosted parties, events and community meet-ups at different spaces across the city since 2019, and is now establishing a permanent city centre home. Sheffield is by far the biggest city in the UK not to have an official Pride, which has pushed the community toward building its own infrastructure โ€” a dynamic that tends to create more genuinely inclusive spaces rather than heavily commercialised ones.
