Xenogender is a nontraditional gender identity that is defined by experiences, concepts, or sensations that exist outside of conventional human understandings of gender. Instead of relating to masculinity, femininity, or neutrality, xenogender individuals describe their gender using metaphors, abstract ideas, or connections to nature, objects, emotions, or even fictional worlds.
A person who is xenogender might say their gender feels like stardust, static electricity, deep space, forest energy, or a specific aesthetic—anything that feels true to their sense of identity, even if it doesn’t align with common gender categories.
The term xenogender comes from the Greek prefix xeno- meaning “foreign” or “strange.” It was coined within neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ communities to describe gender identities that are non-human in nature, nontraditional in form, or difficult to describe using standard gender language.
Xenogender emerged from the desire to provide language for people—especially those who are neurodivergent—for whom common gender labels like “male,” “female,” or even “nonbinary” didn’t feel accurate or complete.
Xenogender challenges the idea that gender must be understood through human social constructs. It affirms that gender can be felt, conceptualized, or experienced in ways that are deeply personal and often symbolic. For xenogender individuals, identity may be best described using non-gendered frameworks, like energy, color, sound, or elements.
Recognizing xenogender identities is crucial for building a more inclusive understanding of gender diversity. It validates that not all genders can—or should—be explained in familiar terms, and that each person has the right to define their gender in a way that resonates with them.
Nonbinary – An umbrella term for identities outside of the male-female binary. Xenogender often fits within this category but is uniquely abstract or conceptual.
Neurogender – A gender identity influenced by being neurodivergent. Many xenogender people also identify as neurogender, though not always.
Aesthetic Gender – A gender identity rooted in visuals or sensory experiences. Xenogender may be considered a type of aesthetic gender.
Otherkin / Therian – While different, some individuals with non-human identities may find that xenogender aligns with their sense of self.
Fictigender – A gender identity related to fictional characters, worlds, or themes. Often overlaps with xenogender.
Kingender / Faungender / Voidgender – Specific xenogender labels that connect gender to certain animals, mythological creatures, or the void.
To be xenogender is to define your gender on your own terms—outside the bounds of society’s expectations or language. It’s a reminder that gender can be imaginative, symbolic, sensory, or deeply abstract. Xenogender identities open the door to endless possibilities for expression, where no metaphor is too strange, and no description too unconventional.
In a world that often limits identity to boxes, xenogender expands the universe of what gender can be—and who gets to decide it.
